Question
Some women have an overriding tendency to spread talk of [what happens in their] houses and in their marital lives with their relatives and friends, and some of this talk is household secrets that their husbands don’t want anyone to know. So what’s the ruling concerning women that go about divulging secrets and spreading them outside [their] houses or to one or another individual in the house?
Shaikh Ibn ʿUthaimīn’s Response
Indeed, what some women do of spreading talk of [what happens in their] houses and in their marital lives to their relatives and friends is [something] forbidden [to do]; it’s not allowed for a woman to divulge her household secrets, or how her situation is with her husband, to any single person.
Allāh the All-High says:
فَٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ قَـٰنِتَـٰتٌ حَـٰفِظَـٰتࣱ لِّلۡغَیۡبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ ٱللَّهُۚ
The righteous women [following Allāh’s law correctly] are obedient to Allāh the All-High and to their husbands [and] keep safe everything their husbands are unaware of from those things they have been entrusted with, by the protection Allāh [gives them] and the success [He grants]. (Al-Nisāʾ 34)
And the Messenger ﷺ stated that the worst of people in rank with Allāh on the Day of Resurrection is the man who enjoys conjugal relations with a woman and she with him, after which he spreads her secret.
